Bhai Phota is a Bengali Hindu celebration, celebrates two days after the Kali Puja. The celebration is like Bhai Dhooj in northern India, Bhai Tika in Nepal or different parts of eastern India & Bhau Beej in western India. Sister puts sandalwood Tilak on her siblings’ forehead & pray to God for their success, health, & long life. It is a celebration that assigns a sister’s love for her brother. With putting sweets in their sibling’s mouth. Sisters favored and wished a long & prosperous life for them.
History of Bhai Phota
As per Rig Veda, Yama & Yamuna were twins (sibling & sister) born to Surya. The Yamuna once want to see her sibling & welcomed Yama to her home. Whenever Yama, the divine force of death went to his sister, his sister appealed to God for his prosperity. Another legend on the origin interfaces Vishnu, Krishna, & Mahavira.
